Why screws go missing, and how magnets stop it

A screw drops, hits concrete, and the bounce takes it somewhere geometry favors and eyes do not: under the bench, into a floor drain, into the grass. Overhead work makes it worse, because the screw leaves from head height and lands anywhere in a room-sized circle.

The fix is not better luck. It is keeping the screw attached to something at every step: to the bit while driving, to a mat while the assembly is open, to a holder while your hands are full.

On the bit

Our screw ring slides onto any 1/4 in. hex bit and magnetizes it end to end, so the fastener holds to the tip pointing down, overhead, or inside a cabinet where the other hand cannot follow. Two rings come in the pack; one stays on the drill, the other on the driver in the kitchen drawer.

On and off takes bare fingers, which matters more than it sounds. The ring comes off for delicate electronics and goes back on for the fence line, and no part of that involves finding a tool to adjust a tool.

On the mat

A teardown produces bolts in an order, and the order is the reassembly manual. Our mats hold them through magnets under faux leather: the small square takes one pocket of a toolbag, the narrow strip lies along a fender edge, and the big bench mat holds a whole carburetor laid out in rows.

The strip runs 23 magnets and the bench mat 83, so parts stay in their rows when the mat gets nudged. Rolled up, any of them takes glovebox space until the next oil change.

On the hip

The belt clip is for the minutes between bench and work: N52 magnets on a textured face, rated to hold 22 lb of driver, wrench and a handful of screws at your hip. Both hands stay on the ladder, which is where hands belong on a ladder.

The texture is the quiet detail. Smooth magnet faces let tools skate and drop exactly when you lean; this one grips sideways as well as flat.
